Organ Regeneration
“Regenerative medicine” is expected as a medical system for the 21st century. Presently in the field of regenerative medicine, clinical application of stem cell transfer therapy (in which stem cells that are present in our body are taken out and transferred to damaged sites of patients’ organs and tissues) has begun.
The ultimate goal of regenerative medicine is organ replacement, by which an organ that has lost its functions is replaced by an artificially regenerated organ. However, the development of technology to create three-dimensional organs is hardly progressing.
In order to develop technology for organ replacement regenerative medicine, we conduct basic research using hair and teeth as models, jointly with medical and dental research organizations and private companies. Also, we are working on developing an in vitro organ culture system for its application to viscera and other organs in the future.
